Control locks and power with Relay
How to use Relay Jeweller to remotely control an electric lock or another 230V appliance.
What the relay does
Relay Jeweller opens and closes an electrical circuit, controlling power to a connected appliance — for example an electric lock, a pump, or lighting. The contact is potential-free, so the relay can control circuits regardless of voltage, within its limits.
Installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Wiring an electric lock
- •Connect an external 12/24V power source to the relay's power terminals.
- •Connect the positive lead from the power source to one of the relay's contact terminals, and the lock's positive lead to the other.
- •Connect the lock's negative lead to the power source's negative lead — the relay then controls whether power reaches the lock.
Fail-secure locks must not be used on emergency exit routes under fire regulations. Consider backup power and an emergency release, such as a connected Button Jeweller, so the door can still be opened during a power outage.
Controlling the relay
- •Manually in the app: tap the toggle to open or close the relay's contacts.
- •With a physical button: connect a Button Jeweller to trigger the relay instantly.
- •Automatically: create a scenario that controls the relay on arming/disarming, alarms, a schedule, or other triggers.
Two operating modes
- •Bistable mode — the lock stays in its current state regardless of power, until the relay is toggled again.
- •Pulse mode — a brief electrical pulse (0.5–15 seconds) toggles the lock's state, then reverts automatically.
